Shielding in Chemistry - The HydrogenShielding in Chemistry has two main concerns. First, the shielding system must be able to withstand even the worst environments that can occur in experiments and second, the shield must be able to maintain the integrity of the experiment and reduce the effect of external influences, such as atmospheric conditions, heat sources and pressure changes.For the first concern, carbon dioxide (CO2) is used to provide shielding. When a substance is added to a gas containing oxygen it combines with the oxygen and creates an atmosphere. The two gases combine to create this atmosphere and a molecular bond is formed. This bond is that with the molecular nucleus of the oxygen molecule.In the atmosphere, the carbon dioxide and the oxygen go through a series of chemical reactions to form some compounds. These compounds are less dense than the air and, as they rise in the atmosphere, are being compressed. This is because the water molecules around them are more de nse than the air. As the molecules rise, the water molecules are pressurised causing them to rise. The release of this compressed air also causes compression in the surrounding gas molecules which, in turn, causes the atoms of the molecules to become separated.In order to stabilize the rising molecules, a water molecule is positioned between the two slightly buoyant atoms of the surrounding gas molecules. Since this water molecule is similar to the surrounding water molecules, it is protected from the pressurised air and is able to float to the top of the molecule. This water molecule then becomes 'smeared' with the surrounding molecules due to the attractive force.The smeared water molecule is then able to slide down the middle of the molecular line and join up with the central part of the water molecule. If the pressurised air has not caused the molecules to move far enough apart, then the smeared water molecules will combine with the neighbouring molecules in a water-oil structur e and form a lubricating fluid.While this oil does not allow the two molecules to combine and form a long molecule, it provides a protective barrier and prevents the water molecules from being separated. As a result, the pressurised air has much less effect on the molecule which means it is more stable.Once the apparatus is put into a sealed room, which has high temperatures, it is important that there is always an open supply of hydrogen. The hydrogen will change the molecular structure of the CO2 and could potentially cause it to explode.

It is also a primary subject and it would be a good idea for students to get an A grade in this subject (READ: A Students Guide to Study Breaks). Take a look at these tips to help you on your way to success as a history student 1. Skim through the entire unit once it is assigned. Don’t simply look at one chapter here and there because all of history is connected in one way or another. 2.   Look for cause and effect in all of the battles and wars that took place during the time span that you are learning about. Note which ‘wins’ and ‘losses’ led to an additional battle or the end of a war (READ: How accurate are multiple choice tests?). 3. US history students should make a list of accomplishments from every president that they are expected to know about. Write down why each president was inspired to make a change or provide a particular service or thing to US citizens. Also, write down a list of shortcomings that each president had. Think about why a particular president made a mistake or what circumstances led to such shortcomings. 4. Make a timeline (use the one provided in your textbook to help get you started). Make a note of all the important dates, events and people involved during that time period. Make sure that you have a different time line for each history class and a different timeline for each country. Try getting some poster paper so that your time line can be big enough that you can leave plenty of blank space and add to it as the semester goes on. 5. Color code. If you are taking world history, assign a different color to each country, this makes things visually clear and helps determine cause and effect. It can also help students understand how different countries relate to each other during wars as well as during times of peace. 6. Take notes. Students should be writing a 5-7 sentence summary of each chapter and a second summary for each unit. This will take you about 15 minutes now but it will save you hours later on and will also serve as a study guide when it comes time to get ready for the midterm and final exams. 7. Annotate your notes. Once you have down some basic notes, annotate them. Underline, highlight, circle or square any crucial information that you might want to remember later on. 8. If you are in an AP class, get the test prep book early on. Just because you will be taking the test in May, doesn’t mean that you should wait until March to order that test prep book. Order it now and use it as a giant study guide (READ: Building Vocabulary: Test Prep Edition). 9. Join a study group. Get together with a few of your friends and/or classmates and meet once a week at a coffee shop (or any suitable place) and discuss the basic events that will be on the next exam. In order to truly understand history, it is important to understand the ‘why’ in the WWWWWH (Who What When Where Why How). Answer questions like: Why where women excluded from the vote? Why did the world allow slavery to happen? Why did people endure indentured servitude? Why did people fight in the Crusades? Why did people in urban areas die from the plague faster than people in rural areas? See what she had to say about her school: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Paige: The Downtown Phoenix campus is incredibly safe. When I first started there in the fall of 2008, it was the first year the campus was open. At that time, Downtown Phoenix wasnt as populated, but now its thriving. The light rail runs all the time, which makes traveling to the Tempe or other Phoenix areas easy and affordable. As for the campus itself, everything is within a few blocks, so no need for a bike or other transportation if youre planning to stay local. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Paige: Because the downtown campus is so much smaller than the other campuses, class sizes are substantially reduced. This gives professors lots of time in class and during office hours to work with students. I cant think of a time when I had a question or concern and I wasnt able to work with my advisor or professors to address it. This made our classes much more than standard lectures, but instead a glimpse into the daily lives of those in the journalism world. Once I started down the PR track, I was able to take classes that helped me progress my knowledge in the digital space that helped me get to my job in online marketing that I have today. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Paige: Living downtown pretty substantially reduces the number of people students meet relative to how many students go to Arizona State University. Paige: The Walter Cronkite School is amazing (yes, I mean amazing) when it comes to helping students find jobs and internships. During my time there, I had seven internships, two of which were paid. During one semester alone, I interned for one of the best PR agencies in Tempe and also the Arizona Diamondbacks. Granted, I was extremely motivated to get as much professional experience as possible during my undergraduate years. Still, the career center for the Cronkite School in particular makes it incredibly easy to find internships and jobs throughout the year. They usually have internship fairs and also email lists of openings throughout the year. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Paige: There werent all that many spaces designated as study areas on the downtown campus. Usually, there were quiet empty classrooms with computers available that we could use. Im also pretty sure I only went to the downtown campus library a handful of times while I was at school. If youre looking for the big library or student union setting, the ASU Library and Student Union on the main campus are only a short trip away on the light rail. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Paige: When I went to school on the downtown campus, there really wasnt anything to do in the Downtown Phoenix area. Over the last five years, though, things have changed drastically. I currently work only a five-minute walk away from my old campus and frequent lots of fun restaurants and bars in the area. For those who arent 21, theres also First Friday, art galleries, a movie theater, sporting events, shopping, bowling, and even a comedy club. If none of that sounds entertaining, all the fun of a traditional state school in Tempe is just a short light rail ride away. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Paige: ASU as a whole, I believe, has around 60,000 students. The downtown campus is pretty small, relatively speaking, and most students dont live on campus after the first year. Class sizes on average range from 15 70 people. Once you get beyond the initial freshmen general-knowledge classes, students are broken up into smaller 15-20 person classes for the higher-level subjects that usually include group discussions and engagement. No matter what the class size, though, professors always made time for students if they had questions. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Paige: I remember the first class I took that challenged me with the role of a real journalist.
